The Ashland Housing Development Corporation, a registered 501(c)(3), is an entity of the Ashland Housing Authority, directed by Stan Gaither. Our mission is to promote affordable housing and economic development opportunities for residents of Clay County, Alabama. The AHDC is currently operating 254 federally assisted housing units in the city of Ashland, Alabama. In addition we also sponsor many youth programs in our community including; Youth Sports Program, Ashland Library Summer Reading Program, Clay County Arts League Summer Arts Camp and the Cheaha District Boy Scouts of America. Our goal is to create additional programs that will serve the greater needs of our county residents.

We are currently working to establish a Carpentry Technical Training Center. In partnership with Central Alabama Community College, local business partners and with a grant through the Alabama Workforce Initiative Program; the goal of the training center will be to provide county residents the opportunity to learn a career skill that will prepare them to enter, or reenter, the workforce. We believe this partnership will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to increase the quality of life for the graduate and their family plus provide a quality candidate to meet the employment needs of our local industries and employers.

The AHDC is confident that we will be able to secure the grant funding and our intent is to build upon these partnerships to develop a sustainable community model that produces retail goods and services, made in Clay County, Alabama. Utilizing the proceeds of the training center, revenue will be used for continued growth of our training center(s) as well as our expanded philanthropic efforts. Our first such project is the Ashland Community Garden Market. The community garden will be the place to learn how to grow vegetables in a variety of different styles. Under the expert tutelage of Dr. Chip East and with the assistance of our local master gardeners and local farmers; we will provide locally grown produce for the benefit of our low income housing residents. We are also working with Megan Robertson at the Clay County Extension Office in educating residents on programs that assist in purchasing and preparing nutritious meals with their EBT (food stamps) and voucher funds.

The market will also serve as a retail location for cottage industry producers, artisans and growers. We are proud to offer their products as well as other whole food and organic groceries for our community.
We are most proud of our community kitchen. With our head chef, Cynthia OmKnight’s knowledge and expertise, the community kitchen will take the vegetables grown in our garden and from our growing partners and create highly nutritious and delicious meals. We will be serving a salad, soup and juice bar for lunch Tuesday through Saturday, as well as evening meals.
With the help and support of our local churches and volunteers, we will be preparing, serving and delivering our nutritious meals to those who are elderly or because of disability, sickness or handicap, are unable to prepare a meal in their homes. We believe the Community Garden Market will meet many needs of our community, many of which are yet to be discovered.

To help jumpstart our efforts in raising awareness of our community programs we are organizing a fundraiser to raffle off a tiny house on wheels, built by the carpentry shop. We are in need of community partners who will offer their support financially as well as with their time, services and products. We believe that building and raffling off the tiny home will serve as a platform for launching our plan by increasing community awareness and support. Together we can develop this new and sustainable economic opportunity in Clay County.

We have several trailer manufacturers that are interested in donating the trailer needed to build the tiny home but we still need a facility to build it in. We also have a need for the materials necessary to finish and furnish it such as: rough sawn lumber, kitchen cabinets, windows, door, plumbing and lighting fixtures, heating and air conditioning, furniture etcetera. Our plan is to sell a raffle ticket for $20 or 6 for $100. We are planning to have the drawing held live on 100.7 The Power of the Country in the spring.

We appreciate your support in advance. All financial donations will go towards the development of these goals. We ask you to open your hearts as well as your checkbooks to give back to the community that you serve. We believe that we can work together to provide more than a handout; help us provide a step up.

Sincerely, Stan Gaither Director Ashland Housing Development Corp. A 501(c)3
